I broke the news earlier today that The Athletic is about to dive head-first into mixed martial arts. I won’t reveal any of the talent they’re bringing in, because I don’t know who has signed and who hasn’t. But I can tell from looking at my subscription stats from that post who decided to forward the email at least 32 times, which means at least one of the names I’ve heard is likely in. Which is good, because he’s one of the best, along with the other three names I’ve heard bandied about.
Now, here’s the bad news: I might be fucked.
I fully realized this the day I heard about Athletic going into subscription MMA. There’s only so many $5 and $6 subscriptions people will commit to every month, and I understand I’m going to lose some of you. No hard feelings. Those guys are going to deserve your money and your attention after spending so many years toiling away in content factories.
What I’m hoping to do here, still, is different than what you’ll find at the Athletic. I doubt you’ll see the guys who get hired there write the kinds of things I write here, first because they are often vulgar, and second because I often take aim at the people who can make journalists’ lives quite tough. I’m lucky because he can’t make my life tough, so I can sit here and call Dana White a lying scumbag all I want, because it’s the truth and I’m going to tell you the truth.
I guess what I’m saying is: If you’re looking for something different, that’s why I’m here. The Athletic will feature incredible long-form journalism and features from some of the best in the game.
That’s not the territory I’m going to cover here. I’ve got a really small niche that has proven to be quite popular, and I am so very grateful for all of you who have subscribed or read my free emails. And I would be grateful if you considered subscribing, if only to support me, because I promise you I’ll work my tail off to bring you the stuff nobody else will.
And that includes The Athletic (which I will still subscribe to and am very much looking forward to their launch.)
